Where to stay in the first-class capital of New South Wales is a perennial thorn in the side of visitors Down Under. Sydney after all, has a reputation as not only the most expensive city in Australia but one of the most expensive in the world. This long-held narrative about the superb metropolis however, is not altogether applicable for tourists.

This, needless to say, is very good news for potential visitors. As a result, one can dismiss the usual tales and scare tactics about Sydney’s potential high costs, and simply enjoy. Sure, swish boutique hotels, restaurants and clubs can stretch budgets thin but in this regard, Sydney is no different from any other big city, from Tokyo to Moscow, London to Toronto.

It always helps to be resourceful and thankfully, a little research will yield phenomenal results in Sydney. The trick is to look beyond the Central Business District and heart of the City and into the metro area’s inner-city suburbs and frankly, outer-city suburbs. With a terrific and extensive public transport network, all the big-name attractions are easily accessible, from Sydney Opera House to Taronga Zoo, Sydney Fish Market to Sydney Aquarium.

The (relatively) quiet coastal suburbs that line the Northern Beaches, for one, contain myriad accommodations for every budget. Close to a quarter million people live here after all and from Palm Beach to Manly, the area is full of charm, gorgeous scenery and perhaps best of all, painless transport alternatives into Sydney.

For Sydney motels a little closer to the Harbour Bridge, look to attractive inner-city enclaves like Kings Cross, Glebe and Haymarket. These superlative areas offer exquisite nightlife, restaurants, parks, markets and real neighbourhood charm. Light rail, train and bus access into the heart of Sydney of course, is a simple affair.

Another Sydney region budget-conscious tourists may want to explore is the Eastern Suburbs. Bondi Beach will certainly be familiar to most but other (somewhat more affordable) ocean-side areas like Bronte, Coogee and Marouba could proffer the ideal kind of hotel, motel or hostel.

So while Woolloomooloo, Pyrmont and the CBD could well deliver the Sydney hotel of your dreams, it never hurts to look beyond the obvious and strike a good balance between budget and common sense concerns. With that in mind, Sydney can be a brilliant destination for everyone.

Brooklyn, New York contains quite a few world-famous neighborhoods that became iconic stand-ins for the borough like a result of television and movies. Two such “nabes” are Dyker Heights and Bay Ridge. Dyker Heights is most renowned nowadays for its annual display of Christmas lights and decorations, erected by residents on their own initiative.

A community tradition that spontaneously began sometime within the 1980s, the practice continues without having any type of organization whatsoever to this day. Stories in the press and other media came to generate even far more participants, and now, more than three decades later, Christmas displays is what Dyker Heights is best recognized for around the globe.

It was originally conceived like a premier suburb for New York’s middle and upper middle-classes, and still remains one from the city’s toniest enclaves, with bucolic streets and well-kept properties. No longer predominantly Italian-American, it has also turn out to be house to numerous Asians, specifically the Chinese. Similar demographic trends have reshaped Bay Ridge, which, in addition to Chinese people, can count a sizeable Middle Eastern presence, with a tiny but active Muslim religious community.

Also usually quiet, though not as bucolic with less trees, Bay Ridge can occasionally consist of the nearby community of Fort Hamilton, which may be the location of the few cultural attractions you will discover in an otherwise residential bedroom community. The area abounds in parks, even so, and is really a short distance away from those in adjacent neighborhoods like Bath Beach and Bensonhurst. Indeed, the views more than the Verrazano Narrows are majestic, and Bay Ridge had also once served being a rich man’s summer retreat.

For an idea of Old Brooklyn, as lived by generations of ordinary men and women, a visit to Bay Ridge is in order. There is really a charm about the place which is challenging to describe and effortless to get sentimental above, but it’s a feeling that defines what it means to be from Brooklyn.

Margate, Kent is a seaside village in the Eastern part of Kent in England. It is situated just over 60km northeast of the town of Maidstone. The history of Margate is intertwined with the sea. It used to be a ‘limb’ of Dover in the historical alliance of the Cinque Ports.

All the amenities of this seaside resort in the East of Kent, with its lovely beaches and many entertainment options, were originally developed as a holiday area for Londoners. The town has excellent facilities, including two theatres, more than one cinema, a golf course, fishing opportunities and as mentioned, great beaches.

The town plays host to two excellent museums. Margate Museum (the old town hall) near the old market place, houses displays portraying the history of the town. The Powell Cotton Museum, to be found in Quex Park, has numerous displays of items that were brought back from his many trips to Asia and Africa by this intrepid explorer.

At the time of going to press, the old Dreamland Amusement Park was closed for renovations, but it could be open again by now. It’s home to one of the oldest roller coaster in the United Kingdom.

The Scenic Railway, the second oldest in the world, was badly damaged in a fire during 2008. Plans are to incorporate the railway with Dreamland Park mentioned above, offering trips to tourists.

The Shell Grotto, with both walls and roof decorated in elaborate fashion by more than four million shells arranged in complex patterns covers about 200 square meters. It was rediscovered during the 1930s, but the original age and origin is unknown.

In the Old Town area at the back of the promenade, you’ll find a lovely old 16th century two storey timber framed Tudor house that was originally built on a flint base. It’s in quite a good condition and well worth a visit.

On the Margate seafront you will find a lovely old clock tower that was erected in honor of Queen Victoria in the year of 1897. The harbor building itself, built in 1810 by John Rennie, is in quite a good state of repair. Some of the other buildings along the promenade are not in the same state of repair, although there are still fine examples of Victorian seaside resort buildings to enjoy.

The quite fascinating Old Town lies at the back of the promenade and although not visited by many day trippers, it actually has a lot to offer. There are well preserved examples of Georgian and Victorian buildings, some of them nearly 500 years old. It’s a lovely spot to just stroll around for a couple of hours.

When it comes to accommodation options, Margate – Kent has more than enough to satisfy the needs of every visitor. There are cozy little bed-and-breakfasts in Margate and also good quality hotels for those who want to enjoy the facilities that only hotels normally offer.

When you go to Peru most people’s first thoughts aren’t of trekking up the side of a mountain but this is exactly what adventurous travellers on active holidays do every year. As far as walking holidays the trail leading upto Machu Picchu is one of the most exciting treks you can do on this planet. If you love to walk or trek then the Inca Trail with Machu Picchu being the sight that greets you at the end is quite simply found nowhere else. With a road that is 500 year old you really don’t get a more historic or mysterious atmosphere when walking the Inca Trail anywhere else on the globe.

The temple that was Machu Picchu was built as a fortress as well as a place of worship. 4,000 feet up on a mountain side to build a temple is quite a tough thing to do so you can only imagine how difficult this was back in the time of the Mayan reign.

It is a 40 mile walk that never goes below 8,500 feet and for huge sections of the walk you will find yourself at 11,000 feet or above so do not be fooled into thinking this will be easy. Be warned that if you think you might suffer from altitude sickness then this walk is probably not a good idea because there is no medical help to be had. This has got to be one of the most ideal ways to experience a country with so much beauty as Peru.

As mentioned before take care of yourself and if you start to feel dizzy sit down as there is no one medically trained to help you on the trail. Make sure you arrange a guide before you climb the mountain beacuse it is now compulsory otherwise you will find yourself sitting around without being allowed on the mountainside.

Peru holidays are something really different and if you don’t feel a multi day trek is within you capabilities then you can always take the train from Cusco.

With a wide variety of hotels in Algarve to choose from, there is something for all budgets and tastes.

If keen to see some of the Algarve’s cultural attractions, consider taking a trip inland to visit some of the region’s historic cities with their winding streets.

When to go

The summer months of June, July and August are the most popular time to visit. However, the wildflowers are especially lovely during the spring, plus you’ll find the Algarve hotels tend to be far less crowded.

With its shimmering sandy beaches, historic picture-postcard towns and superb championship golf courses, Algarve has something for everyone.

Florida is one of the top places to visit across the United States, if not the number one holiday hot spot. Orlando is in Florida, and holds the worlds biggest Amusement parks, attracting many tourists. Florida receives more visitors a year than the whole of the United Kingdom and with so many attractions there is no wonder why. Disney world is the largest theme park in the world, but is not the only one in Florida. Universal Studios and Disney World are the two biggest here, with at least four more large ones as well!

What else is there in a smaller market that brings people to Florida. There is a lot to see in Florida, but did you know that it is also home to a place where wine is made from Oranges. Fruits contain sugar, which means that they can be fermented, which is how you make alcohol.

The Spanish came over to America, and when they did they needed to the ability to grow wine away from Spain. Grapes were the universal way to produce wine and are still the most commonly used fruit in the world. Even thought the atmosphere and the climate were perfect for growing the grapes, the soil was uninhabitable for them. This soil just didn’t have the minerals and vitamins that the Grape needed to survive. Although relatively strong fruits, they couldn’t survive here. Using the grapes was no longer a possibility, and another fruit was needed in order to create the wine, something tougher.

The easiest and clearest option that they took was the Orange, a sturdy fruit that could be easily maintained. They can survive on a lot less than the grape can, and also have high sugar levels. There are orange grove wineries in Florida and are great for you to visit on your Florida holidays. USA holidays haven’t exactly blossomed because of the Orange wines, but they should be visited, maybe even if you are on a Fly Drive USA tour!

There are over 200 hotels in Lanzarote for holidaymakers to select from. With six 5 star establishments amidst their ranks, all offering high levels of luxury and service.

The Arrecife Gran Hotel stands head and shoulders above the rest – quite literally. As it is housed in the only high rise building on the island. Which was originally constructed in contravention of local planning laws during the 1980´s. And which then lay idle for years as the local government wrestled with what to do with the edifice.

For a while it became a real eye sore as the structure was burned out by arsonists and then surrounded with ugly corrugated iron sheeting. A real shame given its great location right next to the beach at Playa El Reducto which lies in the heart of Lanzarote´s capital city. But pragmatism finally won through and a few years ago the island government decided that it would be better to utilise the building than demolish it. Granting permission for the creation of the Arrecife Gran, which gives guests great views across the island from its seventeen floors.

Despite this heritage though the best known hotel on the island is still the Gran Melia Salinas, which is located in the resort of Costa Teguise – a ten minute drive from Arrecife – and which was developed with the help of the famous local artist César Manrique. His objective was to create an upmarket resort using the Gran Melia as the anchor for the development. And the resulting creation contained a number of trademark flourishes which haven been copied by many other hotels since. Such as the lush internal garden which occupies the hotel’s central atrium.

Today some visitors have suggested that the Gran Melia´s glory has faded somewhat. But there is still plenty to recommend it and the recently opened Salinas Villas extensions also gives guests access to some of the best holiday villas in Lanzarote.

Playa Blanca in the south of the island is home to a huge range of four star hotels – as well as the Gran Melia Volcan. Which has been modelled after Lanzarote´s most famous tourist attraction, the volcanoes of the Timanfaya National Park. The hotel is located right next to the luxury Rubicon Marina and offers high standards of accommodation. With five main blocks, each of which is named after one of Lanzarote´s best known villages. Making this one of the best hotels in Playa Blanca by some distance.

You can get to the beach resort of Mae Phim easily from central Bangkok – it is less than two hours away. The nearby city of Pattaya attracts more tourists than Mae Phim, but the latter is more relaxed and more authentically Thai. Do not be fooled into thinking that because it is less crowded means that it has less to offer – far from it. It is rather a case of Mae Phim still being a relatively undiscovered, at least to those living outside of the country, gem on the east coast of Thailand. Affluent Thais have been visiting Mae Phim for a long time, as they have been all to aware of what it has to offer. The beaches have always been beautiful, and there is now first class accommodation and attractions to supplement them. Mae Phim offers wonderful beaches, with white sand and clear blue water. Beautiful beaches are actually pretty common in Thailand, but they are rarely as unspoiled as the ones that you will find in Mae Phim. The local tourism authority highly values it beaches and places the cleanliness of them at the top of its list of priorities. As for accommodation options, you will not be disappointed. From simple guest-houses to luxurious hotels, there is something for everyone in Mae Phim. You might want to consider a vacation rental home. These properties are fully furnished homes that are fitted out with all the mod-cons that you could want. Several bedrooms, private swimming pools and landscaped gardens are all commonplace. On arrival, and having unpacked your bags, you should take a stroll around the town center. It is charming and authentic, and has everything that you could want. It has completely modern amenities, but they sit alongside the traditional Thai aspects of the town, rather than dominating them.

Wakefield, West Yorkshire is a busy English city. It was a popular market town in the early middle ages, famous for its great meats and veggies. It then became well known for its inspiring natural beauty and wool. Now nearly seventy thousand people call it home and hundreds of tourists travel to visit it every year.

Wakefield was found to have been a thriving society even in early prehistoric era. Thousands and thousands of years ago, the vikings controlled this area. In late medieval times, the location became a well known and bustling trade village. Wakefield has endured a number of fights, wars, and illnesses to become the beloved city it is currently.

The city is also very well known for its landmarks and landscapes. It’s home to Wakefield Cathedral, the tallest church in the area as well as Yorkshire itself. The area also boasts several ancient and beautiful landmarks like medieval bridges and churches. Hundreds of tourists make treks each year to survey its many attractions.

The city’s Theatre Royal and Opera House will be a welcome sight for art lovers. The exquisite building has been operating since the 1800s and is still going strong. In its early years Wakefield was known for growing and harvesting rhubarb, every year the city still hosts a rhubarb festival. The region, in fact, hosts a number of small festivals each year. And encompassing the area, there are a number of one in a million parks and forests.

The area is also famous for its national English rugby league which is a part of Britain’s Super League. The city is also host to a hundred acre water sports center. It has every sport from surfing and kayaking to water volleyball and sailing. And though they do not play anymore, the city was once home to a decorated football team too.

Wakefield Prison is situated within the city limits. Constructed in the 1500s, it first was used as a corrective facility. In the mid 1800s, a well known nursery rhyme was first sung there by the prison’s women inmates. Currently the building is a maximum security prison and holds England’s most dangerous criminals.

Wakefield may not be England’s most famous city. It may not even be Yorkshire’s most famous city. But the area has a lot of heart. The city has a rich and wondrous cultural history. It is also chock full of decade old landmarks and buildings. Wakefield houses an impressive sports complex and a world famous prison as well. And like most small towns, its beauty is best appreciated in person.
