The Arrecife Gran Hotel stands head and shoulders above the rest – quite literally.  As it is housed in the only high rise building on the island.  Which was originally constructed in contravention of local planning laws during the 1980´s. And which then lay idle for years as the local government wrestled with what to do with the edifice.

For a while it became a real eye sore as the structure was burned out by arsonists and then surrounded with ugly corrugated iron sheeting.  A real shame given its great location right next to the beach at Playa El Reducto which lies in the heart of Lanzarote´s capital city.  But pragmatism finally won through and a few years ago the island government decided that it would be better to utilise the building than demolish it.  Granting permission for the creation of the Arrecife Gran, which gives guests great views across the island from its seventeen floors.

Despite this heritage though the best known hotel on the island is still the Gran Melia Salinas, which is located in the resort of Costa Teguise – a ten minute drive from Arrecife – and which was developed with the help of the famous local artist César Manrique.  His objective was to create an upmarket resort using the Gran Melia as the anchor for the development.  And the resulting creation contained a number of trademark flourishes which haven been copied by many other hotels since.  Such as the lush internal garden which occupies the hotel’s central atrium.

Today some visitors have suggested that the Gran Melia´s glory has faded somewhat.  But there is still plenty to recommend it and the recently opened Salinas Villas extensions also gives guests access to some of the best holiday villas in Lanzarote.

Playa Blanca in the south of the island is home to a huge range of four star hotels – as well as the Gran Melia Volcan.  Which has been modelled after Lanzarote´s most famous tourist attraction, the volcanoes of the Timanfaya National Park.    The hotel is located right next to the luxury Rubicon Marina and offers high standards of accommodation.  With five main blocks, each of which is named after one of Lanzarote´s best known villages.  Making this one of the best hotels in Playa Blanca by some distance.

Wakefield was found to have been a thriving society even in early prehistoric era. Thousands and thousands of years ago, the vikings controlled this area. Wakefield may not be England’s most famous city. It may not even be Yorkshire’s most famous city. But the area has a lot of heart. The city has a rich and wondrous cultural history. And like most small towns, its beauty is best appreciated in person.

Sedbergh grew because of its location at the crossroads of old trade routes. It sits at a point where four valleys and their rivers converge on the western edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The Lake District is around ten miles away and so from the town you can explore some rugged and beautiful countryside. If you want a more challenging hike then just head into the Howgill Fells. The nearest hill is less than an hour away by foot and gives great views of the countryside right over to the Lake District.

The efforts of the local residents in making Sedbergh a cultural town have certainly paid off. There are many activities for the visitor to take part in. The range of bookshops in the town is amazing considering its size. The book enthusiast will not be disappointed by a visit to Sedbergh. Every August the Festival of Books and Drama is held.

Books and literature are not the only cultural assets to be found. There are local classes and societies for history, singing, embroidery, weaving and cooking. A comprehensive program of events takes place all year long. There is a heritage arts center in a converted mill building. When this air reaches the leeward slopes, it moves down, condenses, and warms, making leeward coasts generally sunnier, warmer and drier.

Hawaii Trade Winds

Trade winds coming from northeast of Hawaii average 12 mph. These winds occur around ninety percent of the time in the summer and around 50 percent of the time in the winter. They keep humidity at a low level and ensure comfortable temperatures, especially on the northeastern coast of Hawaii.

These cooling winds are created since warm air rises near the equator, flows northward through the upper atmosphere, then cools. Becoming heavier as it cools, it plunges back to the earth’s surface at about 30 degrees latitude, where it flows toward the equator to replace more rising, warm air. This creates cool northeasterly breezes moving along the ocean’s surface, and over the Hawaiian Islands.
